FAQ – Why Should You Not Overload Fridges?

We all sometimes tend to go overboard on our weekly shop and overload our fridges. But did you know that this is actually bad for your appliance?

Overloading your fridge or freezer prevents air from circulating to keep your food cold. This makes the compressor work harder which can lead to failures. If the compressor fails, your fridge can’t cool meaning all your food will spoil.

Here are some of the other consequences overloading your fridge can have.

What Happens if You Overload Your Fridge?

  • Blocked Freezer Vents

Stuffing your fridge to its absolute maximum capacity blocks the air vents, which as mentioned above limits the airflow. Doing this consistently can potentially cause damage to your appliance, reducing its lifespan and resulting in costly repairs.

  • Spoiled Food

Overloading your fridge can also lead to food waste as products may get spoiled. Not only can tightly packed containers block air circulation, it can cause bacterial growth leading to potential health problems.

  • Lower Energy-Efficiency

Trying to store more food than your fridge is designed to hold puts extra strain on the machine causing excessive wear and tear. What’s more, it results in higher energy consumption. Even the most energy-efficient fridges can’t function to their best efficiency when constantly overloaded.

How Full Should Your Fridge be?

You can generally fill about 3⁄4 of your fridge without blocking the air vents. This of course depends on the capacity of your appliance. To find out the maximum capacity of a fridge check the product specifications supplied for the manufacturer.
